TORY-LED GOVERNMENT PUTTING THE MILLIONAIRES ABOVE THE MILLIONS
West Dunbartonshire MP Gemma Doyle and Dumbarton MSP Jackie Baillie have condemned the Chancellor’s Budget
The key Budget announcements will see the richest getting tax breaks whilst ordinary families and pensioners will lose out.
Controversial plans, already being dubbed a ‘granny tax’ were hidden in the small print of the Chancellor’s Budget. The Government’s plans will see 4.5m pensioners who pay income tax losing an average of £83 per year from next April. Those turning 65 next year will lose up to £322 because of a change to personal allowances.
The Government’s cut to the 50p tax rate is giving the richest a £3 billion tax cut instead of the extra money being used to reverse the cuts to tax credits or cutting fuel duty.
West Dunbartonshire MP Gemma Doyle said,
“Today we saw the end of the pretence from the Tory and Lib Dem Government that we are ‘all in this together’. The Chancellor is giving tax breaks to the rich whilst ordinary families and pensioners will lose out.
“The Budget is riddled with unfairness, putting millionaires above the millions of people feeling the squeeze, at a time when growth is flatlining, unemployment is rocketing and people throughout the country are really struggling.
“Labour’s 5 Point Plan gives a real alternative for jobs and growth and, unlike today’s Budget, would kick start our economy and help get people back in to work.”
Dumbarton MSP Jackie Baillie added,
“Mr Osborne has made it quite clear where his priorities lie – and they don’t lie with helping families, or pensioners, or the millions of people who are unemployed.
"The Chancellor had the opportunity to make life easier for families and businesses in our area but failed to take it. It is out of touch to press ahead with a 3p fuel duty rise in August, where Labour's VAT cut would help every Scottish motorist by taking 3p off."
"With growth flatlining, unemployment spiralling out of control, and families are struggling, this budget offers them no help.”
