MP’s Budget Verdict: “You’re worse off under the Tories.”
Following the Chancellor’s budget announced this week, Gemma Doyle MP has criticised the Government for helping the privileged few and failing to tackle to cost-of-living crisis.
Despite boasting about improved economic forecasts, the budget did little to help reassure those families who are £1600 worse off every year under the coalition government.
As well as the lack of help announced in the Budget, the Office of Budget Responsibility has also confirmed that people will be worse off in 2015 than they were in 2010 with real wages having fallen by 5.6% by the end of this Parliament, energy bills up by almost £300 since the election, and over 900,000 young people are out of work.
Speaking about the budget Gemma Doyle MP said:
“George Osborne seems to have forgotten that under his leadership the average working family is actually worse off. Despite his attempts to take credit for increasing the personal allowance, he has shown his true colours by providing tax cuts to millionaires while millions of hard-working people have seen their wages go down and living costs go up.
“A Labour Budget this week would have cut taxes for 24 million people on middle and lower incomes by introducing a lower 10p starting rate of tax. We’d help to get young people into work with a compulsory jobs guarantee paid for by a tax on bankers’ bonuses. We would freeze energy bills, expand free childcare, get more homes built and cut business rates for small firms.
We would help to tackle the cost-of-living crisis for the many, not help to line the pockets of the few. The Chancellor announced none of these things, proving that we are all worse off under the Tories.”
