GEMMA DOYLE SLAMS CLYDE COASTGUARD DECISION
- GOVERNMENT PUTS LIVES AT RISK
West Dunbartonshire MP Gemma Doyle has slammed the decision of the Tory-led Coalition to press ahead with proposals to close the coastguard operations centre on the Clyde.
Despite a high profile campaign throughout the West of Scotland in recent months, the UK Government today confirmed its intention to close the coastguard centre on the Clyde.
Gemma Doyle has previously raised this matter with the Secretary of State for Transport, Philip Hammond, expressing concerns that the move could put lives at risk.
Local MP Gemma Doyle said,
“The decision to close the Clyde Coastguard Centre simply doesn’t make sense and could risk lives. Basing the service in Aberdeen, means the potential loss of vital local knowledge that could make the different between a successful rescue and a tragic incident.
“The terrible sinking of the Flying Phantom at Clydebank a few years ago reminds us how vital our local coastguard service is.
“This Tory-led Coalition are putting cost-cutting ahead of safety and I am calling on Ministers to carry out a full risk assessment of this closure.”
