Gemma Doyle MP: ‘Thoughts with those losing their jobs at Clyde shipyards’
Gemma Doyle MP has expressed her regret as BAE announced a reduction in the size of the workforce at the Clyde shipyards by over 800 jobs.
On the same day, BAE announced that their UK shipbuilding operations would be consolidated at the Scottish yards, safeguarding work there for the foreseeable future.
The announcement comes after a peak in UK shipbuilding not seen for 60 years.
“My thoughts are first and foremost with those who have been told their jobs are at risk. I have continually emphasised to BAE and the MoD the importance of the yards to our local economy, as well as highlighting the skills of the workforce. I have expressed my disappointment at the substantial reduction in headcount, and sought assurances about what will now happen. I understand it is hoped that the vast majority of redundancies will be voluntary or met through redeployment to other parts of the business, and the unions have my full support in seeking the best deal possible for their members.
“I am however heartened by the decision taken by BAE to base their future shipbuilding operations on the Clyde, and whilst it will be with a smaller footprint, it gives the yards a long term future which is extremely welcome."
Ms Doyle also welcomed the announcement that three new Offshore Patrol Vessels would be built on the Clyde, which will help plug the gap in work, before, as is hoped, a new order for Type 26 frigates is placed towards the end of next year. She added:
“It is essential that we maintain the UK’s capability in shipbuilding and this contract will ensure that that is possible.”
